Hcg diet plan Direct sells a liquid form of the hormone chorionic gonadotropin, which is produced by a persons placenta and it has long been believed to promote weight reduction. HGC goods are sold online and in shops as pellets, sprays or oral drops, and are supposed to be taken having a very-low calorie diet of less than 800 calories per day.
In November 2011, Hcg diet plan Direct and six other companies received warning letters in the FTC and also the FDA.
"These HCG products marketed over-the-counter are unproven to help with weight loss and therefore are potentially dangerous even if taken as directed," said Ilisa Bernstein, acting director from the Office of Compliance in FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, at the time. "A very low-calorie diet must only be utilized under proper medical supervision."
The organization falsely claimed the drops were approved by the FDA and charged zi xiu tang approximately $35 for a seven-day supply, based on the FTC. It had sales totaling $3 million between 2009 and 2012.
Executives from Hcg diet plan Direct didn't react to CNN's requests for comment.
Three of the four companies charged owe money to reimburse customers, according to the FTC: Sensa will pay $26.5 million; L'Occitane, Inc.
